Gabigol criticized the refereeing after Santos’ 2-1 defeat to Red Bull Bragantino on Monday in the 34th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. The striker argued that Santos should have been awarded a penalty for a challenge on Rony and pointed to a similar appeal against Palmeiras in the previous round, which was also not given.
Asked about Santos’ recent form, Gabigol objected to the framing of the question and said the team had lost only one match during a period in which it had been playing well. He then returned to the penalty appeals, insisting that both incidents should have resulted in spot-kicks.
PC Oliveira, a refereeing analyst for Grupo Globo, said referee Edina Alves was wrong not to award a penalty after Ryan Augusto’s challenge on Rony. VAR reviewed the incident but did not recommend that the on-field referee consult the monitor, a decision that angered Santos players.
The defeat leaves Santos with one win in its last six matches. Cuca’s team dropped from eighth place, while rivals moved into contention for a place in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.
