Olimpia beat Cerro Porteño 2-0 in Paraguay’s superclásico on Sunday, but the match at La Nueva Olla ended in disorder. After the final whistle, Cerro supporters invaded the pitch and pursued Olimpia’s players, who ran to the dressing rooms. Police intervened before the players were directly attacked.
Eduardo Delmás opened the scoring for Olimpia in the 13th minute. The situation escalated in the second half after Romeo Benítez scored the visitors’ second goal. Benítez celebrated by dancing beside the corner flag, prompting anger among the home supporters.
Cerro fans climbed over a protective barrier, entered the area around Olimpia’s substitutes’ bench and threw objects, including chairs and shoes, at the visiting delegation. Police also had to contain fights in the stands.
According to Paraguayan media, the clashes left two police officers injured and resulted in 32 supporters being arrested. Other spectators left the stadium quickly after the unrest began.
