Campinas came from two sets down to beat São José 3-2 in the second round of the Superliga Masculina on Tuesday, winning 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 15-8. A 29-second rally in the fourth set featured a foot save by Matheus Pinta and a video-review dispute over the point’s outcome.
São José led the fourth set 6-5 after taking a 2-1 lead in the match when opposite hitter Davy Silva served to begin the rally. The teams exchanged 25 touches, including Pinta’s save with his foot, before São José’s Gabriel Pessoa attacked toward the back of Campinas’ court. His shot hit the Campinas block and went out; São José libero Matheus Bandini could not keep the ball in play.
The first referee initially awarded the point to São José. Campinas, coached by Horacio Dileo, requested a video challenge, claiming a net touch by the home side. After an initial review that Campinas said did not match the incident it had challenged, another moment was examined. The review then identified a net touch by middle blocker Johan Marengoni, and the point was awarded to Campinas.
During the broadcast, Globo refereeing commentator Paula Pequeno criticized the review process, saying the wrong moment had been examined first and that the delay disrupted the flow of the match.
The victory leaves Campinas unbeaten after two matches, with the report placing the team third behind Minas and Cruzeiro. Campinas hosts Sesi-Bauru on Monday, November 9, at 9 p.m. São José, still without a win after two defeats, is 10th and hosts Montes Claros on Tuesday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m.
