Botafogo beat Atlético-MG 1-0 on Wednesday in a nervy Brasileirão match, earning a result that leaves them five points clear of the relegation zone. The final whistle brought relief for the home supporters after a game in which the hosts struggled to put the result beyond doubt.
Tite made several changes to Botafogo’s lineup, setting up with three central defenders and bringing Huguinho back as the holding midfielder. The revised defensive structure helped limit Atlético-MG’s threat, while goalkeeper Gabriel Batista made important interventions when called upon. Huguinho also stood out in protecting the area in front of the defense.
Botafogo had less fluency going forward, particularly early on, but Vitinho created the move that led to Edenilson’s goal. The midfielder scored his sixth of the season after making a run into the area.
After taking the lead, Botafogo dropped into a defensive shape with five at the back and Tiquinho left as the lone forward. Atlético-MG found more room but could not break through the home defense or get past Gabriel Batista.
Botafogo had chances to extend the lead late in the match. Matheus Martins failed to beat goalkeeper Éverson in a one-on-one opportunity, and Kauan Toledo also missed chances to make it 2-0. Those missed opportunities kept the tension high as Atlético-MG pushed forward, but the visitors could not find an equalizer. The win gives Botafogo a five-point cushion over the relegation zone.
