Atlético-MG lost 1-0 to Botafogo in the 34th round of the Brasileirão, extending its losing streak to five matches. The club had not endured five consecutive defeats since 2019. With the Copa do Brasil semifinal second leg approaching, coach Domínguez fielded a largely reserve lineup and kept the regular starters in Belo Horizonte to prepare for the match.
Goalkeeper Everson returned after two months out. Atlético had more of the ball early on, but its possession produced little threat. Botafogo found space in midfield and took the lead when Vitinho advanced down the right and set up Edenílson, who finished past Everson.
Atlético improved after the goal, with Gustavo Scarpa helping to organize its attacks. Its clearest first-half chance came when Pascini found Alexsander in the area, but the midfielder’s effort was saved. The visitors began the second half on the front foot, though Botafogo tightened up and looked to counter. Everson later made a close-range save to prevent the margin from growing.
There were some positives for Atlético in the opportunities given to young players. Midfielder Gutte and forward Gabriel Veneno made their first appearances for the senior team, while Vitão was praised for showing he is ready at this level. Among the more experienced players, Alexsander and Scarpa were described as regular performers. The report said Preciado and Pérez remained out of form.
Resting the starters was a deliberate choice ahead of the Copa do Brasil return leg. However, the defeat leaves Atlético’s route to a Libertadores place through the league less secure if Bahia and Fluminense earn points in the round, increasing the pressure ahead of Saturday’s match.
