Scott Bain strengthened his case for a return to Scotland's squad after producing an outstanding performance in Falkirk's 2-0 victory over Celtic.
The result ended Falkirk's 19-year wait for a win against Celtic, gave them a fourth consecutive victory and moved them into fourth place in the Scottish Premiership. Bain was central to the achievement, making nine saves as Falkirk recorded their third straight clean sheet.
His latest shutout extended Falkirk's run without conceding to 342 minutes. Several of Bain's saves were described as exceptional, particularly during a second half in which Celtic repeatedly tested the goalkeeper.
Former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner praised Bain's display, calling it “unbelievable” and highlighting Falkirk's overall defensive performance. Bain said he felt confident in both his teammates and the game plan, adding that it felt like a match in which Celtic would not score.
Falkirk manager John McGlynn also credited his goalkeeper, who turns 35 this month, for making several important saves in both halves. Bain extended his contract in January and is now tied to Falkirk until the summer of 2028, with an option for another year.
The goalkeeper left his role as a back-up at Celtic to pursue regular first-team football, accepting a significant salary reduction in the process. His performance against his former club offered a strong reward for that decision and further established him as an important part of Falkirk's progress under McGlynn.
Scotland's squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures is due to be announced this week. Bain, who has four international caps, believes he has performed well since the previous camp and throughout the season.
He said he enjoyed working with Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli during the last camp and would be delighted to return. His shot-stopping against Celtic, together with his composure in possession, could improve his chances of earning another call-up and competing for a starting role.
