Former West Ham United goalkeeper Rob Green has backed Scott Parker to become the club’s next manager, citing his record of guiding teams to promotion from the Championship. Parker is expected to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, who was dismissed after West Ham’s poor start to the season following relegation.

Parker, 46, has won promotion as a manager with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley. Green, who played alongside him, said Parker’s teams understand what is required to go up, while acknowledging that some critics may find his style of play uninspiring. Green argued that securing promotion should come first, with West Ham’s attacking quality providing a platform for progress.

West Ham were widely regarded as contenders for automatic promotion after dropping out of the Premier League last season, but are eighth in the Championship, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough. They have won two of their last six matches and lost consecutive home games, 3-2 to Southampton and 3-1 to West Bromwich Albion.

Nuno’s departure leaves the club seeking its fourth permanent manager since David Moyes left in May 2024. Former West Ham player John Moncur also endorsed Parker, saying he knows the club well and has done good work at other teams. Moncur added that Moyes’s departure may have been premature, and stressed that results matter alongside attractive football.
