Grêmio have recorded three consecutive victories since Renato Portaluppi began his fifth spell as head coach. Two wins came in the 2026 Campeonato Brasileiro and one in the Copa do Brasil, lifting the team from near the relegation zone to 15th place in the league standings.

The club also hold a 2-0 lead over Atlético-MG ahead of the second leg of their Copa do Brasil semifinal. Grêmio can lose by a one-goal margin and still reach the final.

Renato’s current side has adopted a reactive approach, defending with a low block and looking to counterattack and make the most of set pieces. The team has also switched to a three-centre-back formation. In its three recent wins, Grêmio have not conceded a goal.

The opening goal against Atlético-MG began with a long goal kick from goalkeeper Weverton. Forward Carlos Vinícius beat a defender and scored, as Grêmio went on to win 2-0. The team’s recent results have also included draws with Palmeiras, Remo and Internacional, and a comeback defeat to Cruzeiro.

Grêmio’s remaining league fixtures are against Flamengo, Bahia, Santos, Corinthians and Mirassol, alongside the return leg against Atlético-MG. The report says the club may field a rotated side against Flamengo; Carlos Vinícius and Weverton will be suspended for that league match.
