Mina Bonino has defended FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono following the death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who died after a collision during a match. Bonino, a journalist and the wife of Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, called for an end to the abuse directed at the goalkeeper on social media.
Bonino said Owono had made an imprudent decision that cost his teammate’s life, but stressed that she did not believe he intended to kill him. “He is not a murderer,” she wrote, adding that the incident would weigh on Owono for the rest of his life.
The goalkeeper has received insults and hateful messages since the collision and has deactivated his Instagram account. Bonino criticised the public condemnation online, saying Owono would face a sanction as well as lasting social consequences.
She also expressed solidarity with De Miguel’s family and warned about the effects of online abuse, arguing that people should stop before their attacks cause further harm.
