Matheus Cunha starred as Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford in the Champions League. After the match, the Brazilian reflected on the club’s history and said the current team must make its own achievements.
“It's a new Manchester United,” Cunha said. He added that the club’s past glories deserve to be remembered and can serve as inspiration, but stressed that the team has gone some time without experiencing similar success. He said players join a club like United for nights such as this comeback and hoped the current side could become even a small part of what earlier United teams achieved.
Roma led 2-0 within the opening 17 minutes. United began its response through Bruno Fernandes in the second half, before Cunha scored twice in quick succession to complete the turnaround: first finishing after a defensive error in the 38th minute, then striking from the right side of the penalty area three minutes later.
Cunha described the win as a potential turning point and praised the Old Trafford crowd, saying the supporters helped drive the comeback. He also called it his most memorable night at the stadium and said the team’s response showed its character amid a difficult period.
The forward was sent off in the 46th minute after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Roma defender Balerdi. He returned to the pitch after the final whistle to celebrate with the fans. The victory lifted United to six points and 17th place in the league phase standings, while Roma remained 19th with four points.
