Matt Crooks and Matty Cash are the first Premier League players to receive one-match suspensions for accumulating five yellow cards during the 2025-26 season.

Crooks will miss Hull City's visit to Arsenal after being booked against Ipswich, while Cash will be unavailable for Aston Villa's match at Manchester United following a yellow card for a foul against Fulham.

Under the disciplinary rules, players who collect five or more yellow cards before the end of their team's 19th league match receive a one-match suspension. Six players currently have four bookings and would be banned if they receive another caution before the halfway point of the season: Brentford's Vitaly Janelt and Igor Thiago, Hull City's Oli McBurnie, Manchester United's Harry Maguire, Brighton & Hove Albion's Pascal Gross and Leeds United's Ethan Ampadu.

Once that period has passed, the threshold rises to 10 yellow cards. Reaching that total before a club's 32nd league match results in a two-match suspension. Further thresholds apply at 15 and 20 cautions: 15 bookings bring a three-match ban, while sanctions for 20 yellow cards are decided by a regulatory commission. These thresholds remain in place until the end of the Premier League season.

The next round of fixtures will also be missing four players serving red-card suspensions: Arsenal's Max Dowman, Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez and Sunderland's Omar Alderete.

Similar rules apply in the Championship, League One and League Two. Because those competitions have 46 league rounds, players must avoid reaching 10 yellow cards before the end of the 37th league match to avoid a two-match suspension. In those divisions, bookings are reset at the end of the league season and do not include play-off matches.
